๐Ÿ— 8 Legged Engineers

Spiders building bridges, workplace mayhem, and 20 game keys to unleash your inner eight-legged engineer!

Hello Fellow Engineers!

Spider engineers. Cross-border megabridges. Paddy updates. Meme-tier bridge scores. You know, just another completely normal week at Real Civil Engineer HQ.

In this edition:

  • ๐Ÿ•ท๏ธ We give away 20 copies of a game where I play as a spider and immediately cause workplace destruction

  • ๐Ÿ› ๏ธ We rate a spider bridge I built using nothing but silk and a dream

  • ๐Ÿถ Paddy goes on a wholesome walk (donโ€™t pretend you wonโ€™t click it)

  • ๐Ÿ‘พ Plus, a Steam discount, a Discord invite, and a chance to vote for bridges (the true heroes)

Scroll down, join the Discord, and avoid the architects. You wonโ€™t want to miss a thing.

Letโ€™s dive into it ๐Ÿ‘‡

This week, weโ€™re giving away TWENTY copies of A Webbing Journey! ๐Ÿ•ท๏ธ๐Ÿ‘ทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

If youโ€™ve ever dreamed of being a tiny spider engineer with a massive to-do list (and even bigger web budget), this is your moment. Build bridges, fix printers, 3D print elephants, and, tragically, help architects. (We all make mistakes.)

And now, the moment youโ€™ve all been stuck to your seats forโ€ฆ ๐Ÿ•ธ๏ธ๐Ÿฅ

The Bridge So Big It Needed Two Countries to Approve It

Remember a couple editions ago when I dropped that link in the โ€œCool Links You Should Definitely Click Onโ€ section about the Gordie Howe International Bridge?

Yeah. that absolute unit of a bridge connecting Detroit, Michigan to Windsor, Ontario. Well, buckle your toolbelt, because weโ€™re going deep on this steel beast.

First off: engineers designed this thing, not architects, which is why it actually works.

Letโ€™s break it down.

Why This Bridge is a Flex for Engineers Everywhere

  • Itโ€™s going to be the longest cable-stayed bridge in North America, with a main span of 853 meters. Thatโ€™s long enough to stretch a line of disappointed architects from Detroit to Canada.

  • The towers? 220 meters tall. Thatโ€™s taller than some skyscrapers.

  • It's part of a $5.7 billion (yes, billion with a 'B') project. So next time someone says engineers just โ€œdo the math,โ€ remind them we also manage border-spanning megastructures.

  • Includes six traffic lanes, a dedicated multi-use path for pedestrians and cyclists (you know, for when you want to cross into Canada manually), and massive customs plazas on both ends. Civil engineers didnโ€™t just design a bridge, we created a logistical masterpiece. Meanwhile, the architects were probably sketching curvy railings for the bike lane. ๐Ÿ™„

But Why Should You Care?

Because this bridge is solving a huge infrastructure problem. The current Ambassador Bridge? Built in 1929.

The new Gordie Howe Bridge? Fully modern, structurally elegant (yes, elegance can come from calculus), and built with redundancy, resilience, and real-world traffic loads in mind.

This isnโ€™t just a bridge, itโ€™s an international engineering โ€œbro-hugโ€ between countries made out of concrete, cable, and a complete lack of artistic swirls.

๐Ÿ‘พ Indie Game of the Week:

This weekโ€™s Indie Game of the Week is A Webbing Journey. A bizarrely brilliant platformer where you play as a spider (or a ball, if youโ€™re a coward) completing to-do lists and trashing offices.

In Part 1 of my playthrough, I bravely faced my arachnophobia, built a spider-bridge, solved crimes, ran a 3D printer, and accidentally helped... an architect. Still recovering.

And Yes, your spider can wear hats. Yes, I gave mine an engineerโ€™s helmet.

Remember: the devs generously gifted 20 keys just for this newsletter edition - check your inbox, you might be one of the chosen!

Missed out? Itโ€™s 10% off on Steam right now, just $7 to web your way through chaos and office sabotage.

Watch the full video below and witness the only platformer where spiders file documents, fix GPUs, and expose architect conspiracies.

Itโ€™s time for a Bridge Review!

Behold, the Spider Arch Bridgeโ„ข. The only structure in existence designed, built, and crossed entirely by an eight-legged civil engineer with a big butt and a bigger to-do list.

Built between a desk and a houseplant, this glorious web-stressed, butt-tensioned span uses anchor-based cable-stay principles (and possibly some light chaos magic). Made entirely from spider silkโ€ฆ one of the strongest materials known to man and definitely not drawn on a napkin by an architect in a beret.

Features include:

  • Zero deflection under spider load

  • Direct skateboard access

  • Bonus: no handrails, because spiders donโ€™t need fall protection, obviously

Architectural input? None. Which is why it works. And is still standing.

๐Ÿ’ฅ Overall Bridge Score: 3.1/10
