Steam's Lunar New Year Sale is here!

Hello Fellow Engineers!

Weā€™re diving deep into the Great Pyramid of Egypt, proving once and for all that engineers, not architects, built the only wonder of the ancient world still standing. Weā€™ve also got a bridge trying way too hard to be a sculpture, a roguelite about bridge-building, and an indie game where fish are out for revenge.

Oh, and Paddy? Heā€™s mastered balloon keepie-uppies and might just have a future in professional football if this engineering thing doesnā€™t pan out.

Letā€™s dive into it šŸ‘‡

The Great Pyramid of Egypt ā€“ 2560 BC

This time, weā€™re heading back over 4,500 years to one of historyā€™s most impressive engineering achievements: The Great Pyramid of Egypt. Built without modern tools, machinery, or even the basic luxury of not doing backbreaking labor in the desert, this thing remains one of the most precisely constructed structures on Earth.

Despite what some architect probably claimed, the pyramidā€™s true brilliance comes from engineering. Its base is nearly perfectly level, its sides align almost exactly with the cardinal directions, and its design has kept it standing for millennia while modern buildings seem to struggle with a gentle breeze. Somehow, ancient engineers managed to move and stack 2.3 million stone blocks, each weighing as much as a small car, without forklifts, cranes, or so much as a steel beam. And yet, some contractors today canā€™t even get a patio level.

Of course, there were a few architectural decisions that hold it back. The interior layout is wildly inefficientā€”barely any usable space, just a few claustrophobic tunnels and a handful of mystery chambers. No trusses, no moving parts, just a really, really big triangle. The engineers surely could have done something more interesting, but noā€”some architect probably insisted it had to be "minimalist."

Still, despite its artistic limitations, the engineering of the Great Pyramid is nothing short of legendary. Itā€™s a structural masterpiece that has stood the test of timeā€”unlike some glass towers that seem to need repairs before the paint is dry.

šŸ‘¾ Indie Game of the Week:

Welcome, fellow engineers, to Nautical Survival, where the logo has a twitching mustache (yes, really) and my mouse is an actual anchor. šŸŽ©āš“ But more importantly, this game is pure chaosā€”captaining an armed boat, fighting off angry fish, and trying not to get obliterated by a boss battle against a giant Kraken (spoiler: it didnā€™t end well for me).

I started with a basic boat and a pistol, but things escalated fastā€”snipers, machine guns, torpedoes, and even a crew of otters and cooks (because why not?). Between dodging sharks, outrunning eels, and collecting way too many coins, I was on the ultimate roguelite adventure. And just when I thought I had it all under controlā€¦ the Kraken said NOPE.

Itā€™s time for a Bridge Review!

This oneā€™s an interesting take on the classic bascule bridge. Instead of a simple, practical single span, we get two giant ā€œsailsā€ that rise up dramatically like itā€™s auditioning for a role in a sci-fi movie. Itā€™s a bold choice, but does it actually make the bridge better?

Engineering Feats:

  • Double-leaf bascule mechanism ā€“ Smooth and efficient, exactly what we like to see.

  • Hydraulic power ā€“ Lifts in just two minutes, which is practically instant in the world of moving bridges.

  • Redundant lifting system ā€“ If one side fails, the other still works. Thatā€™s just smart engineering.

Architectural Offenses:

  • The ā€œSailsā€ ā€“ Completely unnecessary. They donā€™t improve function, they just look ā€œfancy.ā€ Classic architect nonsense.

  • Pointy bits ā€“ Because apparently, a working bridge wasnā€™t interesting enough. If it doesnā€™t add structural integrity, why is it there?

Final Thoughts & Score

The Twin Sails Bridge is a well-engineered piece of infrastructure with a solid lifting system and good redundancy. However, it suffers from an architect who clearly thought, "What if this bridge was also a sculpture?" A bit too much flair, not enough pure function.

Final Score: 7.8/10 ā€“ Would have been higher if someone had confiscated the architectā€™s sketchbook.
