šŸ— A BRAND NEW Beaver Colony

Plus: The world's strongest crane

Hello Fellow Engineers!

We’ve got a 100-kilometer monster of a particle collider (because why not outdo the LHC?), a VR game that thinks JCBs are collector’s items, and a bridge review featuring medieval mayhem—complete with questionable zoning laws and zero architect meddling. Oh, and our mascot Paddy is back, breaking sticks and saving shins, like a true hero.

If you’re here for oversized cranes, beaver colonies, and free indie games that make you question capitalism, you’ve come to the right place. If you’re looking to train like an engineer with me, be sure to check out this edition’s sponsor - Huel!

Let’s dive into it šŸ‘‡

A Massive Thanks to Everyone Who Jumped Into This Week’s Giveaway!

Now, without further ado (and of course, a drumroll)… 🄁🄁🄁

Congratulations to ā€œdrknoxā€ and ā€œlongopongonā€! šŸŽŠ You’ve each snagged a code for Planet Coaster 2! Get ready to build, design, and probably overprice entry to your park!

I’ll be rolling out more keys each week, so keep those creative juices flowing and join this week’s Bridge Review poll for another shot at victory! šŸ‘‡

šŸ‘·ā€ā™‚ļø Truss Me, I’m an Engineer…

The Future Circular Collider

This week, let's talk about the Future Circular Collider (FCC), or as we engineers like to call it: ā€œWhen the LHC wasn’t big enough, we built this monstrosity.ā€

This beast of a particle accelerator is set to stretch a mind-boggling 100 kilometers in circumference, making the Large Hadron Collider look like a kiddie pool. It’s all about smashing protons together with enough energy to make physicists squeal and engineers sweat. But don’t worry; architects didn’t have a say in this design (thank physics). If they did, we’d be looking at a modernist ring with ā€œartful spiralsā€ that clash with every structural requirement.

The FCC’s aim? Exploring the mysteries of dark matter, unlocking new particles, and proving once again that physics is just a high-stakes sandbox where engineers get to play with REALLY big toys. It’s a project that'll make you proud to be a fan of massive metal and math—without any impractical architectural ā€œflair.ā€

šŸ— The Mammoet SK6000, the strongest crane in the world
The Mammoet SK6000 is the world's beefiest crane, capable of lifting 6,000 tons— it could bench press your entire neighborhood. This absolute unit is used for moving offshore oil rigs, massive bridge segments, and wind turbines. No banana for scale, but trust me—it’s huge.

Paddy bites stick in half to save his dad's shins!

Paddy’s back at it! In today’s episode, he heroically snaps a stick in half—shin-saving engineering at its finest. Perhaps he’s stockpiling bridge materials…

It’s time for a Bridge Review!

This one comes courtesy of u/Equivalent_Being_869 via r/realcivilengineer, who clearly loves a bit of medieval mayhem. So, Old London Bridge—Europe’s longest inhabited bridge, completed in 1209 and hanging around for over 600 years.

With 138 shops, houses, churches, and gatehouses crammed on top, it was the original "live, laugh, love" location—minus modern safety codes and with way more plague.

I’m not sure what qualifications engineers had back then—probably just a sturdy quill and a ā€œhope-for-the-bestā€ attitude—but you’ve got to respect them for pulling this off. Sure, it burned, flooded, and occasionally collapsed, but hey, it had character!

Score: 7.8/10—iconic, chaotic, and probably a nightmare for medieval zoning inspectors.
