We're tackling The Shard this week...
Engineering With:
Hello Fellow Engineers!
This week, weāre tackling The Shard, breaking down the Sheikh Zayed Bridge, and diving into Monster Care Simulator, a game where I attempt to heal creatures while questioning my life choices.
Also, Paddy is now a Dalmatian, and I found a train ticket reader in Japan thatās basically a Transformer.

š·āāļø Truss Me, Iām an Engineerā¦
The Shard ā A Glorious Triumph of Engineering
Ah yes, The ShardāWestern Europeās tallest skyscraper and a true masterpiece of engineeringā¦ which, unfortunately, had to involve some architects. Theyāll tell you itās all about āvisionā and āaesthetic harmony,ā but letās be realāitās 95% engineering genius and 5% overpriced glass.
Holding up 11,000 tonnes of steel and 95 floors of ego is no small feat, but thanks to clever load distribution, deep foundations, and engineering wizardry, this thing isnāt toppling over anytime soon.
Fun fact: It was built top-down, because real engineers love a challenge. Architects, meanwhile, were probably busy picking the perfect shade of āpretentious greyā for the lobby.

So next time you admire The Shard, rememberāit stands tall not because of an architectās sketch, but because engineers made it actually work. Youāre welcome, London.

š³ļø Your Next Logistics Challenge Awaits!
Even whilst I'm busy planning the perfect highway interchange, I've discovered a game that's going to tickle that efficiency-loving part of your engineering brain: Ship, Inc.!
Remember when I played Lost But Found and got way too excited about organizing packages? Well, the same developers are back with an entire game dedicated to the logistics and packaging systems that had us all oddly satisfied! It's set in the same universe and even includes some familiar items you might recognize from my playthrough.
In Ship, Inc., you're not just moving packagesāyou're the mastermind behind an entire shipping operation. And unlike what architects would have you believe, proper packing actually requires precision and planning!
As a packaging expert at a bustling cargo company, you'll:
š¦ Master The Art of Packaging ā Choose the right box sizes, arrange items for maximum space efficiency, and seal them properly. Those structural engineering skills will finally pay off!
š Process Orders Like a Pro ā Juggle incoming orders while maintaining speed and accuracy. It's like traffic management, but with parcels!
š¢ Build Your Perfect Office ā Upgrade your workspace with improved storage solutions and better shipping tools. No architects involved, so everything will actually be functional!
š¼ Handle With Care ā Some items are fragile (like an architect's ego), and require special attention. Can you ensure everything arrives intact?
ā ļø INSIDER INFO: The developers have confirmed a limited playtest and FREE demo coming soon, but only wishlisted users will be notified when spots open up!
All it takes is ONE CLICK on the green "Wishlist" button to secure your spot.
Don't miss your chance to get early access before everyone else!

š The insides of a train ticket reader in Japan
Ever wondered what makes those Japanese train ticket readers so efficient? Peek inside one, and you'll find a labyrinth of gears and gizmos that could make a Swiss watch blush. It's like the engineers said, 'Let's build a Transformer, but, you know, for tickets.'
š„ They made Pokemon battles x1000 more realistic...
Ever wanted to be a real-life PokĆ©mon trainer but with significantly more insect warfare? Welcome to Kabutoo Park, where you catch bugs, train them, and make them fight to theāuhāfriendly competition. Also, I may have accidentally detached my arm.
š§ Top facts about Londonās historic Tower Bridge
Think Tower Bridge is ancient? Think againāit's basically a baby compared to the Tower of London. Also, it was originally painted chocolate brown because Queen Victoria had a thing for stylish bridges. More fun facts here

Paddy is a Dalmatian now...
Paddy the "Dalmador" is back, and this time he's battling his greatest foeāsnow. Watch as my black Labrador magically transforms into a Dalmatian before your eyes

š¾ Indie Game of the Week:
Ever wondered what itās like to run a PokĆ©mon Center but with significantly more poop management and zero OSHA compliance? š©š
Welcome to Monster Care Simulator, where I play budget Nurse Joy, clean up after chaotic creatures, and try (and fail) to keep them from fighting. One minute, Iām soothing an injured critterāthe next, Iām breaking up a monster brawl and questioning all my life choices.
Healing? Optional. Containing the chaos? Impossible. Watch the madness unfold.

Itās time for a Bridge Review!
Welcome back to Bridge Reviews, where we separate engineering brilliance from architectural arrogance. This time, weāre heading to Abu Dhabi to check out the Sheikh Zayed Bridge, a structure that looks like an engineer designed a perfectly functional bridge, then an architect wandered in and said, "Yeah, but what if it wobbled?"
Engineering Feats ā
Massive 842m length ā Longer than the patience required to deal with architects.
Four sweeping steel arches ā Structurally complex but actually useful, since they distribute loads effectively.
Pre-stressed concrete deck ā Because real engineers donāt trust things that arenāt stressed.
Designed to withstand desert heat ā Unlike me, after 10 minutes outside.
Architectural Nonsense ā
The "flowing wave design" apparently represents sand dunes. Because nothing says āsafe crossingā like a metaphor.
Requires constant maintenance because fancy curves arenāt just a headache for constructionātheyāre a full-time job for engineers.
The LED lighting? Pure architect energy. No structural benefit, just expensive mood lighting.
Final Score: 7.8/10
Would be higher if the architects hadnāt played āSquiggle Warsā with the design. Structurally impressive, but letās be honestāa straight bridge would have done the job just fine.

Beaver dams, coming to the UK soon.
A historic day! Beavers are now roaming freely in the wild in England for the first time in almost 500 years, after two pairs of Eurasian beavers were released at Purbeck in Dorset this afternoon. Beavers have made a comeback in recent years with a number of enclosed releases to date. But, today, the release of these beavers marks the first official release since the Government gave the green light for wild releases last week.

Peace, Love and Logistics,
Matt
